Have you ever felt as if most project portfolio management (PPM) advice just adds work and slows you down? That’s probably because it does. One of the most popular sayings in the world of PMOs is “project management is about doing things right. Portfolio management is about doing the right things.” There is a bright line drawn between the two subjects that separates them and the roles that people play in each process. An individual who manages projects has very little to do with the projects that are selected. Someone who manages portfolios is viewed as a godlike gatekeeper who never soils their hands with the actual work.
